HVAC analytics refer to the insights, recommendations and automation that can be derived from collecting real-time data about heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
Why it Matters
HVAC systems provide thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality. HVAC is an important part of most building such as apartment and office buildings where safe and healthy building conditions are regulated with respect to temperature and humidity, using fresh air from outdoors.
The motors and pumps that make up the components of HVAC systems are generally the largest energy consumers in buildings and cause the most expensive repairs, making them usual targets for operating cost reductions.
HVAC analytics, using data derived from building management systems (BMS), energy management systems (EMS), or IoT sensors, is the primary method by which these optimizations are identified.
The execution of HVAC analytics depends on the setup of the building systems. For example, a large office high-rise in a downtown is likely to have robust controls and a command center from which all systems in the building can be monitored.
On the other hand, most multifamily apartment buildings are more likely to have localized or even pneumatic controls that must be adjusted on the equipment itself.
Nevertheless, HVAC analytics can be a powerful tool for any building operator looking to lower maintenance & repair and utility costs.
